On #perl on irc.perl.org today: < clintp> Winamp-- Checks for new versions, even if I don't want it to. Claims "security issues". Bullshit. If I have an old version, and I want to keep it, that's my problem. STOP ASKING ME. This reminded me of Adobe Reader. Every time it launches because I've encountered a PDF [cf. hates passim] somewhere on the web, it brings up a modal dialog telling me I should download about 5MB of "upgrade" because there's a new "feature" that, er, lets people add background sounds to PDF files. Er, what the hell? That's one of the most retarded ideas I've ever heard. If they're "portable" documents, then that means they should work cross-platform... including on machines that don't have sound cards. Like the one I'm typing on right now. The worst thing is that it doesn't give you a "no, I don't want your stupid update" button. Just "install now" and "install later". < clintp> Same genre of bullshit. Any programmer that bows to the wishes of managment and only gives "YES" / "ASK ME LATER" options needs to be killed. And then anally probed with a jeep. Concur.

Would never have thought of that, would you? Or here's a crazy idea: the cable companies all have channel listings on=20 hand, why not tie that in to this new functionality ? if customer_defers_new_channels() wait_until current_show_ends or customer_changes_channel Really, should that be so hard to do? If the set-top box is smart enough=20 to keep polling the customer until s/he submits to its tyrrany, it=20 should surely be smart enough to at least figure out a reasonable and=20 mutually agreeable time for the tyrrany to begin. --=20 Chris Devers V|=FCZ=88=EA=96=CE=81=A4M=A3 --0-407172777-1134697852=:846--

At least i tried to. It work to some extend - means after deselecting the toolbar Acrobat Reader refused to upgrade due to "unmet dependecies". A day later (and i bet after lot's of complains) the toolbar was deselectable... Alex.

Okay, this isn't "check for updates" related hate, but it's Reader hate nonetheless: so I went into the options and disabled Javascript, because, heck, I don't want random PDFs running random code on my machine. Right? Well, every time I quit the damn thing, it tells me the document in question uses Javascript and asks me to enable JS. What the...? Apparently, some other plugins need Javascript to work and won't function correctly if you disable it. There is NO WAY to disable JS SEPARATELY for documents vs. plugins. Yeah, really damn clever. (My solution was to remove a dozen-odd plugins. Who needs that crap anyway; plus I get faster startup times. Win-win!) Regards,
